For Immediate Release
Landowners to Protest LCRA Groundwater Grab at Wednesday Hearing in Bastrop
Who: Simsboro Aquifer Water Defense Fund (SAWDF)
What: First day of state hearing on application by Lower Colorado River Authority for permit to pump groundwater in Bastrop County for export and delivery into the LCRA service area.
Where: Bastrop Convention Center, 1408 Chestnut Street, Bastrop
When: 10 a.m.
Why: Landowners from Bastrop and Lee counties will be attending the hearing to protest the LCRA plan. Up to 100 of them have filed to officially protest the permit application and have asked to be parties to the hearing. Other protestants of the proposed permit include City of Elgin, Aqua Water, Recharge Water (End Op), Pines and Prairies Land Trust, Environmental Stewardship and Circle D Homeowners Association.
The permit application is before the Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District, but the hearing on the permit is being conducted by the State Office of Administrative Hearings.
LCRA proposes to pump water from eight new wells on the Griffith League Ranch north of Bastrop, under an agreement with Boy Scouts of America. Hydrologists for the Lost Pines District have determined the proposed pumping would result in a drop in groundwater levels of up to 300 feet in the Simsboro formation of the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer.
Landowners will be available for on-camera interview at 9:30 a.m. prior to hearing start. There also will be a bake sale set up outside the convention by landowners.
